With 400 million Tweets a day and 200 million active users, people turn to Twitter to bring them closer to the things they care about, whether it’s the news that affects their lives or the businesses down the road. We’ve put together 5 quick tips for making Twitter work for your business.

1. Follow Potential Customers – Growing your followers is an important key to success. One of the best ways to increase your twitter followers is to follow other people – especially potential customers. Spend time on a regular basis searching twitter for people and other businesses to follow.

ProTip: Search hashtags for topics that your potential customers might be talking about.

2. Automate Your Blog Posts – As business owners and marketing professionals, we don’t have the time and energy to manually post to twitter all day. We recommend automating your blog posts using a tool like HubSpot or Hootsuite so you can leverage your time elsewhere.

ProTip: Balance your twitter account with automated blog posts, manual tweeting and interactions (retweeting, favoriting etc).

3. Hashtag Relevant Topics – To extend the “reach” of your tweets, hashtag them with relevant topics so other people can find your messages. We recommend using 2-3 hashtags per tweet. While it’s become popular to hashtag long, unrelated topics (ex. #thisisarandomhashtag), we don’t recommend this method.

ProTip: Use high-level hashtags (ex. use something like #webdesign instead of #flatwebdesign).

4. Mention the Right People – By mentioning the right people in your tweets, you’re looping them into the conversation. Mention potential customers, current customers, partners and anyone else who might find your message useful or relevant. You can ask questions, give props or simply highlight a piece of content.

ProTip: Make sure to use their exact username (ex. @sproutboxmedia) which you can test before publishing.

5. Retweet Popular Content – One of the best parts of twitter is the amount of new content. By finding and retweeting relevant content, you can provide your twitter followers with useful information. The only caveat is that this content isn’t yours and will be pointing your followers elsewhere.

ProTip: Retweets should be about 25% of your twitter content.
