First of all, I think it’s pretty “safe” (get it?) to say that we all understand the importance of a secure website. When security measures are not put in place, you get Viagra ads on your company’s website. And if you’re the person in charge of your company’s website, you might be looking for a new job.

What is SSL?

One of the great ways to boost security on your website is to add an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate. Google defines it as “the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser” which basically means data passed between your website and the user’s browser remains safe and secure.

You can see if a website is using SSL by looking in the web address bar for “https” accompanied by the green lock (see below).

What is SSL

Do I need it?

Traditionally, SSL certificates are used on websites that process transactions (e-commerce) like Amazon or Target. In fact, modern browsers will now warn users if they are shopping on a website that is not secured with SSL – think big red letters “WARNING THIS WEBSITE IS NOT SECURE”.

Ok, so what if your website isn’t selling products? Great news, recently, Google has started giving a ranking boost to websites using SSL certificates. That means you can install an SSL certificate and Google will rank your website higher in their search results. It’s also a great way to give your users “peace of mind” when surfing your website.

How Do I Get It?

Depending on your website host, you can add an SSL certificate to your website pretty easily. Many website hosts (like our hosting partner WP Engine) now offer the new Let’s Encrypt Open-Source SSL which is free and renews automatically.

So what are you waiting for? Boost your website’s security (and SEO) with an SSL certificate!
